Hello everyone, welcome to the Mattacritic. This is Matthew Hemenway. In this short, I will be talking about CW’s Kung Fu Season 1 that is currently on Max. My feeling about the show is that it is a great show. I have watched all the first season and watched part of the second season so far. I will talk about the first season here in this short. The first season deals with Nicky Shen who is a young Chinese American woman. She escaped to China to go to a Shelan Monastery. She later gets taught by her teacher (Pei-Ling) who has a complicated family history. Her teacher was killed by her sister named Zhilan. She will later go back to San Francisco, CA and return to her family with her mother and father who is in trouble with the Triad in the first episode. She will need help from her sister, brother, and new friend that she met at the community center.
Henry will become an immense help and a love interest for Nicky Shen. There is a love triangle in the first season with Henry Yan and Nicky Shen’s old boyfriend Evan Hartley. She wants to stop Zhilan and knows that she must keep her from acquiring all the weapons because they represent a great power. She knows that this is her responsibility.
Nicky Shen’s sister Althea will be engaged to Dennis Soong in the first season of this series. Nicky Shen will also patch up her relationship with her brother Ryan. Ryan is gay and he is dating Joe who is an activist who wants to make a difference and fight for what is right.
The martial art sequences in this series are realistic and I know that it can be done, not the magical but the fight scenes that you want Nicky Shen and Henry Yan does. Zhilan is also realistic in her fighting scenes.
There will be an epic battle to the end the first season, but there is another villain besides Zhilan who is after the mystical weapons, and they are not just traditional weapons. If you know who that is, please leave your answer in the comment section below.
